He was the second oldest son of Goswin II of Heinsberg and his wife Adelheid of summer's Castle. He received his education in Cologne and Reims. Before he was archbishop in Cologne, he was Domdechant in Cologne and Dompropst in Liege. In late 1167 he became head of the state Chancellery and the Archbishop of Cologne.
