The Crusades

The Crusades (in the strict sense) were a series of military campaigns that took place during the 11th, 12th and 13th century. They started as an attempt by Christians towards Jerusalem, the holiest place in Christianity, to recapture it from the Moslims. The Crusades had a number of specific characteristics. So they usually began with a proclamation by the Pope. The call was then distributed through a papal bull and preaching of clergy.

Only formal cross knights were entitled to go on crusade (that changed in 1213). The crusades were funded by a specific tax, such as cruzada or 'Saladin Tenth.
