Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina of Austria was the second child of Charles VI of the Holy Catholic Empire, a descendant from the house of Habsburg, and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Later there were born two sisters. The only son of Charles VI of the Holy Catholic Empire, Johan Leopold, died as a child in his birth 1716. Charles VI of the Holy Catholic Empire had in 1713 proclaimed the pragmatics Sanctions, which allow a daughter to the Austrian throne. Maria Theresia's youth was carefree and she developed into an independent and self-assured woman with the knowledge that she should ascend the throne.
