Bomb attack during the wedding of king Alfonso XIII of Spain / 31-05-1906.

During the wedding of king Alfonso XIII of Spain with Victoria Eugenie from Battenberg there was a bomb attack.

The bomb exploded during the drive in a carriage trough Madrid. The freshly married couple were unharmed but twelve other people lost their lives at the bombing attack. The couple got acquainted during a diner party for the honorary of King Alfonso. He met a cousin of the British king Edward VII, her name was Patricia. He proposed to her, but was rejected. After that he set his mind to Victoria after which the two got a relation ship.

On the 9th of march 1906 the engagement was announced. The family of king Alfonso protested against the relation of the couple, as well as the Spanish people. To overcome this problem the British king gave her a higher title.

The anarchist Matteo Morral threw a bomb to the coach after the consecration of the marriage. The fresh couple remained unhurt, but 12 people died and approximately 100 bystanders were wounded. The attack was typical for the situation in Spain at that moment. A large part of the people wanted to make an end to the monarchy. After that time more attempts were undertaken to bring down the king and the monarchy.
